Handling odorants

Farmfood specializes in recycling various offal from poultry slaughterhouses for specific uses – especially for the pet food industry and biogas plants. Production is continuously expanded. Heat-treated slaughterhouse waste has a distinctive odor that can be difficult to completely remove in mechanical or chemical filters.

The proximity to the city of Løgstør places strict requirements on odorant emissions. The environmental authorities require a maximum of 10 LE at the facility and 5 LE at the neighboring boundaries and they conduct annual inspections.

Filter capacity

The pre-filter handles a partial flow of up to 10,000 m3 with high hydrogen sulphide concentrations, the level of hydrogen sulphide is reduced in the pre-filter and then mixed with other air that is led to the biofilter. The biofilter is dimensioned for 116,000 m3, with the option to optimize to 130,000 m3. The biofilter is built in 2 tanks, with a total area of 1,012 m2.

“It is difficult to remove odors from heat-treated slaughterhouse waste, which emits many different odorants. With our BBK biofilters, we have found a broad-spectrum, safe solution that effectively removes all odors from production, to the great satisfaction of the neighbors. BBK performs monthly service visits to the plant, checks the cleaning performance and ensures that we meet all environmental requirements. When building filter systems, they are carried out as a turnkey contract by BBK, who has always delivered a quality product at the agreed price”.

Efficient biofilters

Farmfood has production close to the city of Løgstør and has gradually expanded the factory. The special conditions with heat-treated slaughterhouse waste have placed high demands on odor filters, which must be broad-spectrum to avoid nuisance to neighbors. Throughout the years, BBK has supplied biofilters to clean up to 100,000 m3 air/hour. Careful containment and local extraction ensures that all odorous substances are effectively removed within the system.
